Cola Can Lead to Brittle Bones in Women

Published by admin at 5:39 pm under Women's Health

colaScientists have recently found that the more cola a woman drinks, the more brittle her bones will be. This is the case for both regular and diet soda. It is thought that the phosphoric acid found in cola drinks is the source of this problem. This acid may cause calcium to be excreted from the body, increasing the risk for brittle bones.

Osteoporosis will develop when a woman’s bone cells are lost than are generated, thereby reducing the density of the bones. The women who drank cola in this study had a lower bone mineral density in the hips. Interestingly, other types of carbonated drinks did not seem to cause the phenomena.

If you are concerned about osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about calcium intake, avoid cola drinks and get plenty of exercise.
