Stress in Pregnant Women can lead to Smaller Babies

Published by admin at 1:03 am under Pregnancy and Baby

A recent study has shown that women who suffer from depression or stress during their pregnancy tend to have smaller babies with lower birth rates than those women with less anxiety. Why? Researchers think the hormone cortisol may serve as a mechanism that transfers stress directly to the baby.

Ninety eight women were followed for three years, each recording their stress levels and lifestyle during pregnancy. The women who had higher stress levels were more prone to have premature or lower birth weight babies.

Of course everyone has regular ups and downs, particularly when there is a baby due soon. But if your stress level seems overwhelming, be sure to talk to your physician right away about ways to reduce your anxiety.
