I just wanted to say that I have recently quit smoking because I found out that I was pregnant. This was really hard. Do you have any tips for ohter women out there that may still be smoking during pregnancy?

    Megan,

I applaud you for making the decision to quit smoking! I am not a smoker, but my own mother smoked all through her pregnancy with me & still does .. a lot, despite several health scares. I also believe I’ve been affected by her choice not to quite during her pregnancy. But, at the same time, I have seen first hand how difficult it can be. She quite for a few months this year & was doing very well, but now she’s started again .. from boredom & stress. I found a few tips that might help other pregnant women just a little:

    * Think about your reasons for quitting. Think about how quitting will help you and your baby.
    * When you get the urge to smoke, do something else instead. Find a way to occupy your hands, your mouth, and your mind.
    * Carry other things to put in your mouth, such as gum, hard candy, suckers or a toothpick.
    * Reward yourself at the end of the day for not smoking. See a movie or go out and enjoy your favorite meal or how about that bowl of ice-cream you’ve been craving.
    * Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke. This helps with “morning sickness”, too!
    * Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes. This could be a wonderful way of saving for the up-coming baby!
*Stay away from places, activities or people that make you feel like smoking.
*Get support and encouragement- Be sure to tell your family, friends, and coworkers you are quitting and ask for their help. Also, ask smokers not to smoke around you.
*Talk with your doctor about your plan to quit.

Good luck to all the expectant moms out there who are quitting! You’re making a very big decision which will ultimately affect your unborn baby in a positive way so very very much! :)
