Governor Schwarzaneggar Trades Text for Digital
Arnold Schwarzanegger has introduced a new plan of action to bring the educational arena on par with the rest of the world and help to revitalize his financially drowning state all at the same time. His newest idea is to eliminate hard copies of school textbooks and replace them with online electronic versions. This switch from heavy hardcovers to up-to-date digital versions of the same thing is heavily favored by the former actor/bodybuilder turned politician, as he feels that already tech-savvy youngsters will not only adapt quickly but embrace the new change.
A world of up-to-date information fits easily into their pockets and on to their computer screens. So why are California's public school students still forced to lug around antiquated, heavy, expensive text books?' he stated.
The lovely state of California is the first of the states to put forth such a change, but many more states are expected to follow suit as education funds taper off in each said budget.
While Governor Schwarzanegger proposed that the change was due to a swing towards progress in the educational world, opponents of the idea insist that the real reason behind it is purely financial.
The state of California in the wake of massive debts, is challenged with a 15 billion budget deficit. In the previous year, the state education fund paid 218 million on textbooks alone. Education officials quoted a price of between $45 and $60 for each average textbook, quite more than its digital counterpart.
A library official out of Sacramento denounced the moved, stating that pushing aside books was 'criminal', adding: 'Books give students a solid, reliable guide they can refer to again and again.'
Starting in August of the next school year, students learning math and science in California secondary schools will be taking part in digital texts that have each fared an academic review.
