maltoA recall of a few products containing non-fat dry milk has turned into a much bigger recall and is expected to expand even more as the investigation at a Minnesota milk co-op raises concerns of salmonella contamination. The FDA stated that no illnesses related to the recalls have been recorded although traces of salmonella have been found on equipment at one of the plants.

The current recall primarily covers Malt-O-Meal maple and brown sugar instant oatmeal products purchased as over a dozen different brands. Non-fat dry milk made with the recalled ingredients from the co-op have been recalled from grocery stores such as Stop & Shop, Giant, and Meijer.

The dry milk recall is being upheld by Plainview Milk Products, whom stated that although none of its actual products was found to be positive with salmonella, it was being “overly cautious” with the recall. Plainview reported that salmonella traces were found in another product, DairyShake, which is a commercial product that uses ingredients from Plainview, among ingredients from other companies as well.

The FDA reported it found traces of Salmonella on equipment within the Plainview compound as well.

“After the product cleared quality testing and left our facility it was blended with other ingredients and that’s when contamination was found, but in situations like this it’s in the public’s best interest to be overly cautious,” Plainview General Manager Dallas Moe stated.
