Exploding iPhones Causing Worry

Across the globe, incidents of exploding iPhones are being reported and it begs the question, “Should you be worried about your iPhone?”

There have been a handful of people in France, the Netherlands, and the UK are encountering problems with their iPhones and iPod Touches and the European Commission has started an investigation into the reports. Minor injuries, mostly from shattered glass projectiles from the screens, have been reported as well.

The latest report hails from France, with a report of a 26-year-old encumbered with an eye injury from his display screen blowing up in his face. Other tales tell the story of an iPod Touch in Great Britain getting too hot and bouncing in the air shortly after its owner dropped it, a French teen getting hurt slightly by shards of glass from his exploding iPhone & a Netherlands iPhone catching fire and melting a car seat.

Other iPods have been reported as having problems too. A safety report entails facts of 15 fires from too hot or sparking iPhones reported in the U.S.

The problem seems to be linked to the lithium-ion batteries found within the electronics. Lithium-Ion batteries are rechargeable and used in lots of things. There was a huge laptop battery recall in 2006 due to lithium-ion batteries within the computers getting too hot, sparking and even flaming to life.

Federal authorities in the safety industry reassure consumers that no recall of iPod’s is necessary or planned, since the number of reports is so minimal.

Apple’s spokesperson doesn’t offer much, saying,”We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don’t have anything further to add.”

Apple does advise that if your iPod or iPhone starts to get abnormally warm, turn the item off and take to the nearest Apple service center.
