breast-cancer-awarenessThe month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Approximately one in every eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer at some point in their life. To help raise awareness about this horrible disease, we’ve put together some tips on breast cancer prevention.
According to scientists, there are several things around us, as well as things that we do which may increase our chance of developing cancer. Therefore, some risk factors for cancer can be avoided. On the other hand, there are certain risks beyond our control such as age and which genes we have inherited from our parents. These risk factors are obviously unavoidable. Prevention simply means avoiding the risk factors we are able to control in our lives.
Doctors can’t always explain why one person gets cancer while another doesn’t, but it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about extra cancer prevention measures and whether they would be likely to help you reduce your risk.

Here are some things you can do that may not only help prevent breast cancer, but help you to be a healthier you.

  • Limit Alcohol Consumption
  • Don’t Smoke
  • Limit Fat in Your Diet
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay Physically Active and Exercise
  • Limit Radiation Exposure
  • Steer Clear of Pesticides
  • Do Not Take Antibiotics Unnecessarily
  • Breastfeed
  • Avoid Long-Term Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
  • Have Children Before Age 35
  • Consider Other Options to Birth Control Pills
