It was another scary pet episode as a ten month-old infant was injured after her relatives’ pet monkey grabbed her through the bars of its cage. The infant and her mother were visiting their relatives in LaPorte at the time.

“He has her up against the cage and he’s banging her head, pulling her … and then he grabs her by the hair,” stated Bethany Nystrom, 22, the mother of the child.

The infant’s injuries were minor thankfully, as the child’s Great Aunt immediately reached into the cage and freed her niece.

“The doctor said she was fine just a contusion and they call it rope burn on her neck," reported Bethany. "They just said to use A and D ointment.”

Nystrom states she understands the blame does not fall on her relatives and is very grateful there wasn’t a more unfortunate outcome, adding “It's a once in a lifetime thing … kind of like a freak accident.”

Jamie Huss of Michigan City’s Washington Park Zoo stated that unprovoked attacks from monkeys are more common than you might think due to their unpredictability.

According to Indiana state authorities, a permit is not necessary to own a pet monkey and upon investigation, the habitat for the pet was found to be in good repair and sanitary. The pet monkey was current with its shots and authorities stated they were loathe to actually call it an attack, choosing to state that it was an “unfortunate accident.”

After the incident, the monkey’s owners adopted him out to a local animal sanctuary.
