'Miracle Baby' Carried Outside the Womb Survives Delivery
Miracles happen every day in childbirth, as Phoenix, Arizona mom Nicollete Soto can attest – against the advice of doctors and despite the great risk to both her baby and herself, she recently gave birth after having an ectopic pregnancy.
The term “ectopic pregnancy” is used when an embryo grows outside of the uterus. Soto’s pregnancy was technically a Cornual Ectopic pregnancy, which means the embryo was embedded at the end of her fallopian tube.
The condition is very rare and very risky, given that they often result in rupture at 12 to 14 weeks, which can lead to severe bleeding and requires emergency surgery to treat. Soto didn’t find out she even had this type of pregnancy till 18 weeks, which is very unusual.
Convinced that her pregnancy was meant to be, Soto decided to proceed with the pregnancy. Her doctors needed to time a C-section delivery perfectly, giving the baby enough time to develop but not so much that the risk of rupture became too high.
Soto’s baby boy, named Azelan Cruz Perfecto (the baby’s father’s name is Victor Perfecto) was delivered at 32 weeks, and weighed only 2 lbs, 14 oz. He is expected to remain in hospital for monitoring for at least a few weeks before he can go home to join his family, which includes an older brother.
