Baby on Board with Facebook

Posted by ashley

Marriah Greene had over 100 friends by the end of her first day on Facebook – and that’s before she was even born.

While it’s commonplace for people to share their pregnancy and first days with a new baby with the digital world, Ellie and Matt Greene of Texas found a way to take it a step further by creating a Facebook profile for their unborn daughter, whom they’ve already named Marriah.

The account was created with cute info bites, like listing Education as “Tummy University” and citing interests like soccer and swimming, and was intended to quickly spread the news of the new baby to friends and family. The couple created first-person status updates from their baby, and intended to post photos and information as the pregnancy progressed. They also welcomed the messages and advice that came up on the page from Marriah’s “friends”.

The couple also viewed the profile as a sort of online memory book for their daughter. “We wanted to keep the page going, so she could go back and look at it,” Ellie explained.

Unfortunately, it looks like the couple may not get their wish. The page has been removed from Facebook, possibly due to the strict age guidelines outlined on the website – users must be at least 13 years of age to have accounts.

Ellie and Matt haven’t said whether they’ll try to recreate the account or find other ways to digitally share and capture memories of their pregnancy. While their method of facebooking from the womb may seem a little over-the-top, the site’s creator Mark Zuckerburg has been open on the fact that he wants to revisit the issue of the age limit for account creation. Who knows, it may not be long before Baby Facebooking is the latest trend!

Why Facebook? Why not just a blog on any number of free sites like Blogger? I really don’t see why facebook deleting their child’s account when it was in violation of their TOU is a big deal. There are other options out there but regardless of how they share their news and updates digitally I really hope they do it safely. There are many sick and twisted people that steal ultrasound pictures and belly shots. They can also put themselves at great risk of harm to themselves or their child sharing their names, approximate location, due date, hospital or birthing center information, etc.
