Carroll Sextuplets Born Day Before Father's Day!
Talk about an exciting Father’s Day weekend! On Saturday June 19, Mitchell Carroll became a dad six times over when his wife Heather delivered sextuplets at the Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
The five girls and six boys were delivered by cesarean section at 28 weeks. Their weights varied only slightly, ranging from 1 pound 10 ounces to 2 pounds, 5 ounces. Doctors say this is a good sign. “That weight spread is a good sign that there was not one baby that was lagging behind, that all of them had grown and developed well,” Dr Bill McKenzie, gynaecologist to Mrs. Carroll, noted.
Some of the babies required ventilators after their birth, but all are now in stable condition in neonatal intensive care.
It took roughly 50 doctors and health care professionals to bring these babies into the world, even though multiple births are common in the Brookwood facility. “This delivery required a high level of preparation and orchestration,” administrative director of women’s services Amy Beard said. “We were well prepared and I couldn’t be more proud of our team.”
As for the parents, Heather Carroll is said to be resting comfortably, and Mitchell Carroll, after surviving his first Father’s Day as a dad of nine, has turned his mind toward practical concerns like finding a vehicle that will fit his newly expanded family.
Instead of following up on his first joking thought, that he and his wife could just “throw them in the back of the truck like ripe watermelons,” he may want to consult seasoned sextuplet parents Stacey and Brendan Carey, who welcomed their brood just two weeks ago.
