Canadian Couple Robbed While Visiting Sick Baby in Hospital

Ottawa couple and babyGet ready, because this story will make your head spin with anger. At least that's how we felt here at SureBaby when we read about an Ottawa, Ontario couple, their struggling infant and how their home was robbed while they were at their ailing daughter's side in the NICU.

Little Charlotte was born on August 18th with a fairly rare condition called omphalocele, in which some of the internal organs are protruding from the body. Doctors have been working hard to fix the tiny newborn's body, but since she's trying hard to breathe on her own, it's a difficult task. Baby Charlotte is also suffering from other complications, leaving her in critical condition under a heater and hooked up to an array of tubes and machines.

As if it isn't hard enough to watch your newborn baby fight for her life, Chris and Melannie Eldridge were devastated last Saturday when they returned home from the hospital to find their front door broken and their apartment in shambles. All of their valuable possessions had been stolen, including a custom-made Fender bass guitar and a computer, as well as sentimental items and gifts for baby Charlotte strewn about the place. To make matters worse, they didn't have insurance to cover their losses.

The outpouring of sympathy and support from the Ottawa community has been remarkable, with friends and family rallying around the couple and even setting up a nation-wide fund to collect donations for them. Unfortunately, bad things will happen to good citizens, but it's heartwarming to know that communal love and empathy will come to the rescue.

Whoever committed such a heinous crime should feel despicable, and hopefully they will be found. In the meantime, we can only hope that there are better things to come for the Eldridge family.
