Woman with Two Uteruses Gives Birth to Twins!

The odds of many things are one in a million, but how about one in five million? New Florida mother Andreea Barbosa, 24, is experiencing those odds, after giving birth to twins from two uteruses.

Yes, it sounds crazy, but the condition does exist – uterus didelphys, as it’s called, occurs in only one in 2,000 women. It’s not known what causes the condition, but in some women it can cause infertility.

Not the case for Barbosa. After being aware of her condition for four years, Barbosa has a two-year-old daughter, and now has not only carried one baby but two, one in each womb, after two eggs were released and fertilized at the same time, one in each womb.

Barbosa had a reasonably normal pregnancy and delivered the twins, Nathan and Natalie, by C-section on Sept. 15 at 36 weeks. Nathan was born first, weighing 5 lbs 8 oz, and Natalie followed two minutes after at 5 lbs 10 oz, thanks partly to her doctors.

"Because we were aware of her condition, we were able to take special precautions to ensure that both mother and babies would be healthy," Patricia St. John, Barbosa’s doctor, said in a statement.
