World’s Largest Sperm Bank Refusing Redheads’ Sperm
There's a certain amount of personalization involved in artificial insemination, but when does choosing your baby's features cross an ethical line?
Well, one sperm bank has taken a step into the pages of Huxley's Brave New World with their move to refuse sperm donations from redheaded men. They say they're merely responding to the demands of the marketplace; their action shows a move toward physical discrimination.
Ole Schou, director of the Denmark-based Cryos sperm bank, was quick to justify their decision: "We have nothing against red-haired donors. We have just too many in stock in relation to the demand", he told the Toronto Star.
Okay, the sperm bank is just acting as any business would, trying to satisfy their clients. But for redheaded people who have suffered teasing, bullying and general exclusion, it must seem like that prejudice has been officially sanctioned. If you have red hair, you're not wanted.
On the other hand, is the sperm bank really to blame? The news comes as a bit of a surprise here at SureBaby.com, but it seems that the populace is at fault -- if there is any fault here at all. What do you think about the sperm bank's new policy? Is it unfair to pick and choose a child's physical characteristics and personality?
