Parents Skipping and Delaying Vaccinations – Is It Right?
New statistics show that more and more parents are putting off their child’s vaccinations or even skipping them altogether. Is this putting children’s health at risk?
The US Government recommends children be vaccinated against 14 diseases, encompassing at minimum 24 doses, by the time they are 6 years old. A national survey has shown that 1 in 10 parents are failing to meet those guidelines by either skipping some shots or delaying them.
The survey, published in the online journal Pediatrics, included 750 parents with children aged 6 or younger. It follows on the heels of other research in this area, including studies showing the ineffectiveness of certain vaccines over time, as well as a federal survey that looked at over 17,000 households and found 1 in 10 toddlers and pre-school-aged children were missing critical vaccinations for chickenpox, the measles-mumps-rubella shot, and others.
Children and vaccinations have been a hot-button issue for many years now. Many parents feel they are harmful for younger children, and there are even those who believe the vaccinations may be linked to autism (though there is no scientific evidence supporting this at this time).
Some parents believe that the choice to vaccinate should be up to parents, not the government, while others feel the government guidelines are there to protect everyone, as well as the effectiveness of vaccines. There is also concern in the medical community that parents may not have all the information they need to make an informed decision.
At SureBaby, we understand both sides of the argument – wanting to play an active role in the decisions about your child’s health, as well as the need to make sure they are protected from harm, whether that harm comes from getting vaccines or not getting them.
But we want to know what you think. Parents, where do you stand on vaccines for your child? Do you follow government guidelines or do you go your own way? Let us know in the comments.
