Woman Gives Birth as Performance Art!
Artists are always pushing the envelope – but is giving birth in a museum as a method of performance art pushing things too far?
Performance artist Marni Kotak planned to deliver her baby at the Microscope Gallery in Brooklyn in front of a public audience, and on Tuesday, at 10:17 in the morning, that’s exactly what she did.
Kotak created a birthing room in the gallery, complete with a bed, pillows, a refrigerator and photos from her own baby shower, as part of her exhibit, “The Birth of Baby X”, which began on Oct. 8.Before the big day, Kotak spending time in the gallery to talk about motherhood and her ideas for the exhibit. She asked anyone interested to leave their contact info, so they could be contacted when she went into labor.
According to the artist, she expected about 15 people to attend, but so far, the gallery isn’t releasing any numbers. A video of the birth will be worked into the exhibit, now that the baby has been born.
At SureBaby, we’re not sure what to think on this one – at some point, we agree with Kotak that giving birth is the “highest form of art”. But at the same time, we also feel it’s a deeply personal experience, that maybe doesn’t need to be part of a public viewing to be appreciated.
