Couple Lose Custody of Children, Adolf Hitler and Aryan Nation
An infringement on rights or a clear case of child abuse? The jury is still out after Deborah and Heath Campbell lost custody of their children, named Adolf Hitler, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie.
The Campbells, who live in New Jersey, had their children removed in 2009, after a baker refused to emblazon their son’s name – Adolph Hitler – on a birthday cake. The employee reported the incident to the police, and one month later, the children were removed from the home on grounds of abuse and parental incompetence.
The Campbells are fighting the charges, saying there was no evidence of abuse, but that the children were taken in based only on their names – which they acknowledge are controversial, even though they don’t believe themselves to be racist. They claim the names have another meaning to them, but were also shown to have swastikas all over the house.
“This is America, they say it’s free,” Heath Campbell said in an interview. “You have the right to name your child whatever you want to name your child, no matter what.”
While the Campbells have been cleared of child abuse claims, they have yet to have their children returned after an appeals court ruled against them.
This is an extremely controversial subject, and we welcome all opinions. Is a simple name a form of child abuse? Are the Campbells within their rights to name their children whatever they want? We want to hear what you think in the comments.
