Parents Lose Child After Sandwich Theft!

Posted by admin

Every parent tries to explain to their child that stealing is wrong, but the parents of 3-year-old Zofia, Marcin and Nicole Leszcynski, may have a harder time, after they themselves were taken into custody for allegedly “stealing” two $2.50 sandwiches.

The incident occurred at a Safeway store in Honolulu, where the frazzled parents consumed two sandwiches while trying to finish their shopping. They saved the wrappers with the intention to pay for the goods when they got to the cash, but in a so-called “mommy-brain” moment, the wrappers were left in the cart. As the couple went to leave the store, they were pulled aside by a store manager. Despite their offer to pay for the sandwiches on the spot, the manager chose to call the police.

The story gets worse – the parents were arrested and child protective services were called in to take the couple’s baby while they were taken in. Though the police offers tried to arrange to have the parents taken in separately, their efforts failed (we’re not sure why), and there were no friends or family to call to take the young girl.

In total, Zofia spent 18 hours away from her parents, who were able to post bail of $50 each (the charges against them have since been dropped). While this may not seem like an incredibly long time, it is a lot for a small child to go through, especially with no preparation.

There is a lot of controversy over how this situation was handled, and at SureBaby, we want to know – do you think Safeway was within their rights to involve the police in this matter, or is it case of “acting by the book” going too far?
