Woman Gives Birth on Train to Manhattan!

Posted by Alissa Robson

We’ve heard of women giving birth on planes before, but on the commuter train? We think we’d be getting off at the next stop – whatever it is!

After feeling pain similar to contractions, 31-year-old Rabita Sarkar and her husband, of Harrison, N.J., decided to take a commuter train to New York to visit her doctors in Manhattan. Because it wasn’t her due date, Sarkar said she wasn’t worried that the baby was coming, but just wanted to get checked out.

It turns out, her baby had other plans. While the train was en route, Sarkar’s contractions began to come more quickly. Asking her husband to “take a look” at what was happening, he reported that he could see the baby’s head, and the couple both realized their baby was coming sooner than they’d planned.

Once the situation became known to the train’s conductor, the train was turned into an express route, bypassing all other stops so that Sarkar could get to the hospital faster. But it wasn’t fast enough. With the help of a couple also onboard the train, the baby – a boy, who’s name has not been released - was delivered safely.

Emergency response members were waiting when the train made its stop at 33rd Street in Manhattan and took the baby and his parents to the hospital, where everyone is reportedly doing well. “He has a personality of his own,” Sarkar said of her new son. “He decided to come on and that was it. Nothing could stop him.”

A happy ending for sure! Do you have any stories of women having babies in unusual places? We’d love to hear them in the SureBaby comments!
