After being placed in a playpen, a 1 year old child from Greenwich, Connecticut, was strangled from a roman blind. She was found with the cord wrapped twice around her neck, a parent’s worse nightmare. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported a voluntary recall from Ikea, the company who sells the Iris and Alvine Roman Blinds, exclusively.

This is not the only time that a child has been hurt from a window blind and it is an ongoing safety concern. In June of 2008 a two year old girl also from Connecticut, placed a looped window blind cord around her neck and then slipped off the radiator that she had been standing on. Her five year old brother saved her life by picking her up to loosen the hold of the cord. She vomited and had deep tissue bruising, but has recovered completely. The problem is the loop that is used to lower and raise roman blind.

Most blinds now on the market have two strings hanging down with a safety bracket to wrapped the cord around, instead of a continuous loop.

Involved in the recall were approximately 670,000 IRIS and ALVINE Roman Blinds, sold at IKEA stores across the nation from July 2005 and June 2008. The blinds were manufactured in India and distributed by IKEA Home Furnishings. Ikea blinds can be returned to them for a full refund.

Another 7,300 insulated blackout roller shades and insulated Roman shades manufactured in China by Green Mountain Vista Inc. The shades were sold across the nation by Target.com, The Linen Source, Country Curtains, Sturbridge Yankee Workshop, The Curtain Shop of Maine Ann & Hope, Plow & Hearth,The Sportsman’s Guide, and the Solutions catalog. They dates they were sold were between June 2005 and September 2008.

CPSC reminds consumers to examine all Roman Blinds and shades in their homes. If looped pull cords are present or exposed inner cords are found on the back of blinds or shades and children are in the home or occasionally visit your home, please consider replacing them with blinds or shades that do not have exposed pull cords or inner cords. For more information on these blinds, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

That depends on who you ask. There have been some reports that songstress Ashlee Simpson-Wentz (29) and rocker husband Pete Wentz (24) have had their baby. A representative for the couple are denying that the rumors are true.

Fueling the fire, “Life and Style Weekly Magazine” reports that a close friend of Pete’s said he was texting his friends telling them that his wife was in labor, over this past weekend. Our sources are saying that Ashlee was due two weeks ago.The “Daily Dish” at sfgate.com states that on November 18th, sister, Jessica Simpson was quoted as saying that Ashlee is about to induce. As with most over due moms, she is ready to have her baby. No doubt things will happen very soon. We shall keep you posted!

Ashley’s Quotes

“Carrying a child is the most inspiring, emotional, amazing experience of my life,” Simpson wrote on her MySpace page. “My weight and my pant size are the absolute last thing I am concerned about. I am only concerned with having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.”

UPDATE: It’s official the Wentz’s have a baby boy! According to People Magazine, last night (Thursday) Ashlee and Pete’s new son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz was born. He weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz., and was 20 1/2 inches long

“Ashlee, Pete and baby Bronx are all healthy and happy, and thank everyone for their well wishes!” a spokesperson tells PEOPLE. Simpson once told People in an earlier interview that she wanted a big family. Her father, Joe Simpson, presided over their Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-themed Wedding. Their Winnie the Pooh themed baby shower was held Nov. 1st.

Congratulations to Pete and Ashlee. They must be over the moon!

It’s time for a trip to the grocery store and you head to your favorite one, Cosco. You travel first down the produce aisle and get grapes, bananas and the usual produce selections. Then you get home and start to put your groceries away. You pick up your grapes to wash them so you can put them in the frig and you jump back. You see a big ‘ole ugly spider right there on your grapes. You make enough noise that you hubby comes running. He convinces you to trap it in a jar and is pretty sure it is a black widow spider.

This is exactly what happened to Judy Reardon of Michigan who purchased grapes from Cosco last week. The popular grocery store warehouse claims that they sell organic grapes and that pesticides aren’t used on organic foods which explains how a black widow spider might find it’s way into one of their stores. After catching the spider in the jar, Mr. Reardon allowed WCCO-TV to take it to the University of Minnesota’s insect museum, where they confirmed his suspicions.

Mrs. Reardon is not planning on suing Cosco but expresses concern, and wants those who purchase organic fruits to make sure that they carefully inspect these foods and make sure that they are washed thoroughly before giving them to their families.

After mating, female black widow spiders eat their mates which is how they got their name. A bite from a black widow spider can cause someone to become very sick with cramping, nausea and severe pain. Deaths from a black widow spider bite are highly unlikely.

Some Adoption Facts:

A national survey reveals that U.S. adults are considering foster care adoption more often than any other type of adoption, but misperceptions abound about the children waiting to be adopted and the adoption process. Here are a few adoption facts:

On any given day in North America, nearly 600,000 children are in the foster care system, and more than 150,000 of them are available for adoption, just waiting for the right family to find them.

Children enter the foster care system through no fault of their own, as victims of neglect, abandonment or abuse.

Each year, 20% of children (26,517 in 2006) exit foster care at age 18 without an adoptive family.

More children become available for adoption each year than are adopted. In 2006, 79,000 children had parental rights terminated by the courts, yet only 51,000 were adopted.

Adoption may be something that you would like to consider. A great place to get more information is the Dave Thomas Foundation where you can find a wealth of adoption information and resources.

Both Nia and Ian played parts in the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” which Nia wrote. The one-woman play was turned into a movie after Rita Wilson saw the play and recommended it to her husband Tom Hanks.

A recent study in the United Kingdom linked high caffeine intake during pregnancy to miscarriages. This study says that drinking caffeine doubled the chances of a pregnant woman losing her baby, and stated that women might not want to drink coffee, tea or soda.

This study took place in San Fransisco among a group of 1,063 pregnant women. The entrance examination was done in person, and each person was asked what caffeinated drinks they had consumed since their last menstrual period. This list allowed but was not limited to coffee, soda, hot chocolate, and tea. They were then asked which beverages they had consumed daily, how many times a week, quantity of each drink, and what combination of drinks since they had realized they were pregnant. Those women who had miscarried before the exam were only asked what their caffeine intake was before and during the pregnancy up to that point of the miscarriage.

Doctors used the women’s answers to figure out their daily caffeine consumption rate. The doctors also asked about other aspects of the women’s lives, including previous problems with pregnancy and other miscarriages, their age, marital status, race, alcohol & smoking practices, income, whether they had used a jacuzzi during their pregnancy or encountered any magnetic fields, and whether or not there had been any nausea or vomiting related to their pregnancy.

Researchers followed the women to the 20th week of their pregnancy. They compared the rate of miscarriage at the very end of the study, to the rate of women’s caffeine consumed, taking into account all other factors as well that might predate a miscarriage. They came to the conclusion that expecting mothers should not consume higher levels of caffeine as the evidence suggests that it is a factor for miscarriage.

I was paralyzed,” Cristina Zahariuc had given birth to a girl, not a boy. When Dad, Constantin, called the hospital to inform them of their mistake, it was difficult to convince them.
