Is Hair Dye Safe During Pregnancy? Kourtney Kardashian Defends Decision

Posted by Alissa Robson

Is Kourtney Kardashian setting a bad example for pregnant women? The reality TV star has recently stirred up controversy by coloring her hair while pregnant.

There has been much debate about the safety of various hair treatments while pregnant, including coloring, bleaching, and curling or relaxing. The alarm is raised by the chemicals that many of these treatments require, as well as the confined spaces in which the treatments are often performed – being trapped in a small area where chemicals from not only your treatment but other salon treatments are in the air isn’t considered ideal for baby.

But it may be that the dangers of hair treatments during pregnancy are overhyped – like many other substances considered “dangerous” during pregnancy, it comes down to the concentration and how much is absorbed by the body. Unfortunately, there isn’t much data on the specific chemicals used in hair treatments, but it’s believed that in most cases, the small doses absorbed aren’t considered a high risk (assuming, of course, you don’t make salon visits a regular part of your routine during pregnancy).

So what is the final word? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that hair dyes are “probably” safe during pregnancy, but that it’s still best to use caution for any hair treatment. This means avoiding treatments during the first three months (when the baby is very vulnerable), choosing products that don’t contain ammonia or non-chemical vegetable dyes, and making sure you’re getting the treatment in a well-ventilated area (these guidelines apply for home treatments as well, along with wearing gloves when applying the dye).

As for Kourtney, she maintains she did all of the above, and even chose to get highlights only, where chemicals don’t even touch the skin, only the hair itself. She also did her research and consulted her doctor, which is good advice for anyone.
