It’s World Breastfeeding Week – breastfeeding moms unite!

While the decision to breastfeed is a personal choice every mother must make, World Breastfeeding Week is the perfect time to take a look at the many benefits of breastfeeding and how far we as a society have come to accommodate it in our changing world.

Health Benefits of Breastfeeding

While infant formulas have come a long way and will keep your baby strong and healthy, they cannot duplicate the unique properties of breast milk. Breast milk has been linked to boosting immune systems and resistance to disease and infection in babies, and may also reduce a child’s likelihood of having specific allergies. Research is also being done on the connection between breastfeeding and obesity, intelligence and instances of SIDS.

Besides health benefits for baby, breastfeeding is good for Mom, too. Breastfeeding is said to create a bond between mother and child, and can also help reduce stress levels and lower the risk for postpartum depression. Studies have also shown that breastfeeding can reduce the chance of mothers developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Breastfeeding – Part of Daily Life

While there still may be a long way to go toward incorporating breastfeeding into daily life, many strides have been made to help mothers become more comfortable with feeding their babies, whether at home, at work or in public.

Last year, the US Department of Labor passed a “Break Time for Nursing Mothers” provision that requires companies to provide reasonable break times for nursing mothers to express their milk while at work. Also new is the addition of breastfeeding equipment and supplies to the list of acceptable expenditures for flexible spending account pretax money.
