New Yahoo! CEO Says She’ll Take Short Mat Leave – Is it Right?

Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer has a lot on her plate – a new job and impending motherhood! But the 37-year-old self-proclaimed “geek” is already making waves with her announcement that she’ll take a shortened maternity leave.

Mayer’s son is due October 7, which means she’ll have been in her new role less than three months before her baby arrives. But she won’t be gone long. “My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it,” she said, explaining that she likes to “stay in the rhythm of things”. The fact that she’s heading back to work so soon after baby has stirred up quite a battle. On one side, many say she’s in a good position to work, as being CEO likely affords a lot of flexibility in her day-to-day and she’ll have a lot of support with a good team under her.

But on the other hand, many out there are wondering how she can get back to the grind so soon and are concerned that by combining work and baby, she won’t do a good job at either being a parent or working to save a struggling company.

At SureBaby, we’re guessing she’s got a good grasp on what will work for her and what she can make work for her, but a high-profile job and a big decision like shortened mat leave definitely open up the doors for conversation.
