Omega-3s May Fight Postpartum Depression, Study Shows

Omega-3s are high on the list of super-foods for pregnant women but a new study shows there may be even more benefits for both moms and babies than we thought!

Pregnant women have long been encouraged to eat foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish or avocado) as “brain food” for their developing babies, but a study out of Connecticut is showing that the omega-3 may also be beneficial in reducing symptoms of post-partum depression.

The study consisted of 52 women, some of whom were given a fish oil capsule five days per week in the third trimester of their pregnancy, and some who were given a placebo of corn oil. After having their babies, the women were interviewed to assess their sleeping habits, feelings and other indicators of postpartum depression.

The study found that, overall, the women who took the fish oil capsules, which consisted of 300 milligrams of the omeg-3 fatty acid DHA, scored lower on the depression scale than those who’d received the placebo.

While these results are nowhere near conclusive enough to suggest that omega-3s may be used to prevent postpartum depression, it may be a step in the right direction in finding a natural treatment for the condition, which effects between 10 and 15 percent of pregnant women.
