I started the Ortho Evra patch the first Sunday of my period (August 8th) and started having unprotected sex on August 17th. I changed my patch every Sunday after that and took it off for the free week this Sunday (August 29th).

The thing is though, me and my boyfriend had sex this Sunday and I took off the patch a few hours later. How likely is it that I could get pregnant or already be pregnant?

I took a test last week because I was feeling really sick and eating a lot more than usual and my breasts have been hurting, but it came out negative. Could the patch affect the results of the test?

I talked to a pregnancy councellor about it but she didn't really know much about the patch or how it works, but she said she would call me next week to see if I got my period and if not that she would schedule me for a pregnancy test.

I know I could just wait for then but I'm only 17 and obviously this is a bigger deal for me than for a lot of people. I just want an idea of the chances of me being pregnant and any help from people who have been on the patch or who just know about this would be really helpful.

it can happen, no birth control is 100% effective on eveyone, and eveyones system is different.  I was on the Nuva Ring with both my current pregnancy, (now 21 weeks and 3 days) and the one that I lost 2 years ago.

Hi Rainbowz,

Good for you for using birth control. You made a very responsible choice and have maturely followed through with the directions according to the website http://www.orthoevra.com/question-about-patch-how-patch-work.html

If I understand the site, you should be properly covered as far as your birth control goes, with the obvious disclaimer that no method is 100% guaranteed.

I think the symptoms that you are feeling could be due to the fact that your body is adjusting to the birth control, keep in mind that you are now absorbing extra hormones that are changing the way your body cycles and behaves. Swollen breasts and nausea are natural reactions to such change in hormone levels.

Try to keep your salt intake low to reduce your bloating and nibble on crackers to help with the queasiness.

It isn't likely that you are pregnant, so try to relax and wait for your period. In the mean time, it may be a good idea for you to insist on the use of condoms to avoid STIs and also as a back up while you get the hang of the patch.
