I believe an occasional glass of wine or beer during pregnancy is fine.  I had an occasional glass of wine or beer while I was pregnant and I had a healthy 8.3lb baby girl.

I know a lady who lost her baby from partying (non-drugs).  How much is too much?  Why risk it?

I think a few slips or small glass of a drink is fine. As long as a woman isn't chugging down glasses & bottles of it daily. Though I heard of a woman who drank 2 beers & smoked a pack of cigs had a healthly baby with no problems the whole time. (She didn't know she was pregnant) I'm not saying this is ok, I would never do what that woman did but I wouldn't be terrified to have a few sips once in a while either.

As long as you're not drinking daily or even weekly, then you should be fine.

I don't do it.  I don't know about you...but I'm not willing to let even the tiniest chance in of it hurting my baby.  Some doctors are divided on this question so for me...I'll take the safest route possible.  And yep, I'm one of those who won't eat deli meat from subway or jimmy johns without it being heated up too!  I just think...why even risk it?

Hi Gang,

Its an interesting question, and one that has most of the medical community divided. I usually think of the fact that the mother and child are sharing a body, blood system and food supply, so everything that the mother comes into contact with is affecting the baby to some degree.

Back in "the good ol' days" pregnant women were advised to have afternoon cocktails and smoke frequently to help them relax for the sake of the child.

It always makes me wonder what we are doing these days that will make us cringe in hindsight when we "know better" a few decades from now.

As a general rule of thumb, I always erred on the side of less and moderation. I stayed well away from any one smoking or smoking environments and had a small glass of wine with a meal occasionally. The kids seem to have turned out okay, but really you have to decide what level of risk you as a parent are comfortable with.

I think it all depends on the woman and what she believes in.

I am a paranoid person, just a little pain here or something unusual here is a trip to my doctors. personally, I wouldnt risk it.

The "joys" of pregnancy include obstaining from alcohol in my book. I'm troubled by the use of 'occassional' since it's way too vague. It could mean "a couple of sips" a month, a day or an hour - depending on the person.

For first time mothers, pregnancy is a good warm-up for what will happen once the baby arrives and you're no longer the center of your own universe.

Yeah, there are women that have done all number of things while pregnant and ended up with a healthy baby and the reverse is true where some women are ordered to several months of bed rest and they did nothing wrong.

Heck, people have survived shark and bear attacks - doesn't mean I want to chance it myself!

A very interesting topic, and as the saying goes to each his own. As far as Im concerned however the risks far out weigh the benefits. Some say that a glass of wine is good for you, surely you can get those same vitamins and minerals that are good in wine from other non- alcoholoic drinks?

The risks are not only related to the direct impact of the chemical on the child, but being pregnant and not drinking as much as one would normally, ones tolerance for Alcohol is reduced. Chances of getting tipsy easily are heightened and thats when accidents happen, A fall can definatley harm a fetus!

However its not for me to say how other people raise there children, most people will know there limits.
