Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet is based on the idea that grapefruit contains special fat-burning enzymes and is a magic fat burner. There are several versions of this fad diet which was popular back in the 70s and 80s. The overall promise is that you can drop the pounds quickly and easily by eating half a grapefruit before every meal.

Some versions of this diet plan offer the option of drinking 8 ounces of unsweetened juice instead of eating half a grapefruit. According to most versions of this diet, you must drink lots of water and black coffee; sometimes even eating certain foods until you are stuffed, with no snacks in between meals. Calorie intake is extremely low; usually restricted to less than 800 total for the day. Generally, dieters are told to stay on the diet for approximately 1-3 weeks and then take a 2-day break before continuing on. Each and every version of this diet plan seems to have a different menu and varying rules to follow.

The diet itself is far from a instant weight-loss secret, but when added to a healthy diet is good for you. This fruit may actually lower insulin levels in the blood. Keep in mind, while it may reduce insulin levels and is low in fat, this diet is viewed by some as nutritionally deficient and potentially dangerous to one's health and wellbeing. Single-food diets are can be too restrictive. Long-term weight-loss success is doubtful on this diet plan and you will likely gain back any weight you lost even more quickly. Be aware, grapefruit juice may interact with certain medications and be harmful. Always check with your physician before starting any diet.
