Hemorrhoids

Swollen blood vessels around the anus that may bleed and cause pain. They are quite common during pregnancy, because of the increased blood volume and increasing pressure from the uterus on the veins that return blood from the legs and pelvis.

Heartburn

A burning sensation that occurs in your chest about the level of your heart is what gives this condition its name. It's caused by the contents of your stomach backing up into the esophagus, then the stomach acids irritate the lining of the esophagus. It has nothing to do with the heart at all.

Home Birth

A home birth is one in which the baby arrives at home, or away from a hospital or birthing center. This option is only appropriate for women with low-risk pregnancies, and the birth needs to be attended by a physician or a midwife. It is in the best interest of the baby, as well as the mother, that a hospital is nearby in case of an emergency.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced in early pregnancy by the placenta. It is used to detect pregnancy by a home pregnancy test or a blood test.

Hyaline Membrane Disease

Hyaline Membrane Disease is a respiratory disease that occurs in newborns (usually premature).

Hydramnios

Hydramnios is an excess of amniotic fluid.

Hypertension

High blood pressure, which can occur during pregnancy.
